Ideal Weight Calculator

A healthy-weight range from BMI plus medical reference formulas (Devine, Robinson, Hamwi, Miller).

There is no single "ideal weight." A healthy range is typically defined by BMI 18.5–24.9 for your height, for a 5'10" adult that's about 129–174 lb. Medical reference formulas (Devine, Robinson) give a single number used for drug dosing.

  • 5'0" (152 cm) → 97–127 lb (44–58 kg)
  • 5'5" (165 cm) → 114–149 lb (52–68 kg)
  • 5'10" (178 cm) → 132–172 lb (60–78 kg)

These ranges come from the WHO BMI classification and are general guidance. Athletes, older adults, and people with high muscle mass may sit comfortably outside them.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI a reliable "ideal weight" measure?
For population-level guidance, yes. For individual assessment it has limits, it cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Body fat percentage and waist-to-height ratio give better individual signals.
Why do reference formulas (Devine, Robinson) give just one number?
These were originally developed for medical drug dosing, where a single reference weight is needed. They're calibrated for adult males of average build and tend to under-estimate ideal weight for women and tall individuals.
Should I target the low end or high end of the range?
Neither inherently. Your goal weight depends on body composition, activity, and health markers. Many people feel best 2–5 lb above the BMI midpoint if they're moderately muscular.
