What Is Mean Arterial Pressure?

When you take a reading from automatic blood pressure monitors, they give you both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings, there is also a small number of parentheses beside your normal blood pressure reading, which is known as Mean Arterial Pressure. In other words, it is also known as your average blood pressure.

Individuals may not have that much need of knowing the Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) but doctors use it for a variety of reasons. They use MAP to check if the patient has enough blood flow, resistance, and pressure to successfully supply blood to all the organs of the body.

What Is Resistance?

Resistance is how the width of a person’s blood vessel impacts their blood flow. Blood flow through a narrow artery is very hard, the more resistance there is, the more the blood pressure but decreased blood flow.

The Formula For Mean Arterial Pressure:

MAP = (CO x SVR) + CVP

How To Calculate Mean Arterial Pressure?

Calculating the Mean Arterial Pressure is very easy, just follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Enter Your Systolic Blood Pressure

In the first step, you have to add your systolic blood pressure. This is the first number when you check your blood pressure, it denotes the pressure in a person’s artery whenever the heart beats.

Step 2: Enter your Diastolic Blood Pressure

In the second step, you have to add your diastolic blood pressure. This is the second number when you check your blood pressure, it denotes the pressure in a person’s arteries whenever the heart takes rest between beats.

What Are The Results?

Upon entering the details, you will be able to find your Mean Arterial Pressure, also known as the average blood pressure.  What do they donate tho and how much should a normal MAP be?

For the majority of people, the normal MAP is 60 mmHg (millimeters of mercury), it could be even more than this. This shows that there is enough blood flow to the person’s major organs like the heart, brain, lungs, and kidneys. If your MAP is between 70 and 100 mmHg then it is normal.

What Happens When There Is A High MAP?

If your Mean Arterial Pressure is higher than 100 mmHg then that could be really dangerous. This usually means there is a lot of pressure in a person’s arteries and it could lead to blood clots or worse. If not taken care of, it could lead to heart attacks, kidney failure, or even complete heart failure.

What Happens When There Is A Low MAP?

If your Mean Arterial Pressure is lower than 60 mmHg then that could lead to problems. This means that the blood isn’t even reaching the person’s major organs. If these organs don’t get the required blood and nutrients then their tissues get damaged and eventually die. If not taken care of, it could lead to sepsis, strokes, and even internal bleeding.

How Do You Treat Unusual MAP?

When a person has an unusual Mean Arterial Pressure it means that there is a problem in their body or there is a medical condition. Diagnosis of the problem is necessary as that will eventually lead to the treatments.

If a person has low MAP then they should increase their blood pressure in a safe manner. This safe manner of increased blood flow will make sure that the person’s organs remain healthy and safe without any kind of damage.

If a person has high MAP then they should decrease their blood pressure in a safe manner. Nitroglycerin can be used to relax the blood vessels so that blood reaches the heart easier than before.
